State of the Industry Report: Alternative seafood

This report from the Good Food Institute sets out the current state of the growing seafood alternatives industry, covering the industry’s commercial landscape, investment, sales data, and consumer insights from January 2020 to June 2021. It includes plant-based, cellular agriculture and fermentation-based forms of seafood alternatives.

Between 2019 and 2020, alternative seafood sales grew by 23% in the United States. However, it remains a small proportion of the overall alternative protein market. As of June 2021, over 87 companies worldwide were active in the alternative seafood industry, making alternatives to fish sauce, fish sticks, salmon fillets, shrimp, tuna, eel, cod, scallops, scampi and more.
