A new report, The Avoidable Crisis, finds that large-scale deforestation, fires and human rights abuses are linked to soy plantations and the global meat industry.
The report, from NGOs Mighty Earth, Rainforest Foundation Norway and Fern, documents the effects of soy production in Argentina and Paraguay, traces the supply chains to Europe’s livestock industry and calls on European industry and governments to take action. It points out that sourcing policies which focus on only one ecosystem, such as the Brazilian Cerrado, can create a perverse incentive for production to expand to other areas. The report focuses on soy used for animal feed and does discuss soy used for direct human consumption.
