This short white paper, produced for the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2018 in Davos-Klosters, explores some issues around the production and consumption of meat.
Current issues discussed include malnourishment, obesity, intensification of the livestock industry and antibiotic resistance. Looking to the next few decades, issues discussed include increasing demand for meat, the increase in animal feed required, climate change, deforestation, water use, health concerns and plant-based alternatives to meat. Future innovations mentioned include cultured meat, algae, feed supplements for livestock and protein-rich microorganisms that can feed on woody material.
