The EU parliament has now approved a law which will merge the separate EU school milk and fruit schemes and boost their combined annual budget from €20m to €250m a year.
A milk programme is also included in the new law. It will be a voluntary aid scheme aimed at making member states promote more healthy eating habits, local food, organic farming and the fight against food waste. It will also encourage children to reconnect with agriculture, for example through farm visits.
