This report from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) serves as an update to the 2018 Wasted Food Report and provides detailed estimates, by sector and management pathway, of 2019 wasted food estimates. The report finds that in the US in 2019 produced 66.2 million tons of wasted food, 20% of which from food retail, 40% from food service, and 40% from residential sectors. Of that waste, 59.8% was landfilled. The food manufacturing and processing sector generated a further 40.1 million tons of wasted food, 42.6% of which was managed by anaerobic digestion.
