Catalysing investment in sustainable aquaculture

This report from US charity The Nature Conservancy explores how private investors can help to meet the demand for sustainable seafood by investing in new forms of aquaculture that have lower negative environmental impacts than conventional aquaculture.

The three main investment opportunities identified by the report are:

  1. Seaweed and bivalve farming systems, which require few inputs and can restore degraded habitats by providing habitats for other marine species.
  2. On-land finfish recirculating aquaculture systems, which are physically separated from marine environments and allow for the treatment of waste water before it is returned to the environment.
  3. Offshore finfish systems, which can avoid damaging critical marine habitats by being placed relatively far from the coast in deep, nutrient-poor waters with strong currents.
