This report from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation examines how traces of veterinary drugs can pass through the food supply chain and affect either non-target animals or people who eat contaminated meat, eggs or milk.
The report makes several risk management recommendations, including:
- Train workers and authorities on the risks of carryover from the use of authorised veterinary drugs, and make sure that information is easily accessible
- Encourage separate production lines for medicated animal feed
- Promote methods of avoiding medicated animal feed, such as through good animal hygiene, genetic selection, animal welfare, and feed safety
