Land degradation and the Sustainable Development Goals: Threats and potential remedies

This report from the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) considers the relationships between land use, land degradation and sustainable development goals.

Topics discussed include the trade-offs between different land uses, related sustainable development goals (particularly number 15, ‘Protect and restore terrestrial ecosystems and promote sustainable use of natural resources’), the current state of land degradation across the globe, and strategies to reduce land degradation and restore landscapes. The report concludes that there are dilemmas resulting from conflicts between different development goals, that secure land rights and collective action are necessary to slow and reverse land degradation, that land and water management should be considered together, and that solutions are often specific to particular landscapes and communities.
