Unilever's Ben & Jerry's brand is piloting the use of hydrocarbon based freezers in the US in the hope that they will eventually be approved for long-term use.
Fifty freezers will be based on this refrigerant in autumn 2008, with approval to test up to 2,000 freezers in the next few years. Up until now, the hydrocarbon technology has been allowed, and has been introduced, in every country except the US.
