UK Government develops new consistent nutritional labelling scheme

The UK’s Department of Health has launched a new, standardised but voluntary labelling scheme for displaying nutritional information on food products, the aim being to make make it easier for people to make healthier choices. The system when it goes on display will combine red, amber, green colour-coding and nutritional information to show how much fat, saturated fat, salt and sugar, and calories are in food products.

A typical label will look like this:

All the major supermarkets have registered for the program, as have Mars UK, Nestle UK, PepsiCo UK, Premier Foods and McCain Foods. Health NGOs including Sustain and the National Heart Forum welcome the new scheme.

However Cadbury and Coca-Cola have rejected the system, preferring Guideline Daily Amounts which look like this:
