The EU40’s Animal Taskforce has produced a short report which outlines a proposed roadmap to supporting the EU livestock sector towards more sustainable practices.
This is a follow-on from three debates which took place in 2016 entitled “Sustainable EU Livestock: Actions towards an Innovative, Climate-Smart and Competitive Future” in which participants identified policy areas where the livestock sector needed support. The authors take into account the three pillars of sustainability and examine what needs to be done in order for the industry to become more ‘environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable’.
Reducing consumption is not mentioned in the roadmap and, instead, it emphasises innovation, technology, and science-based solutions. The authors state they wish to ‘enable the conditions towards a strong sustainable EU livestock sector, and to maximize its contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.’
