According to a leaked United Nations study seen by The Guardian newspaper, greenhouse gas emissions from shipping are almost three times higher than previously believed.
Annual emissions from the world's merchant fleet currently stand at 1.12 billion tonnes of CO2, or nearly 4.5% of all global emissions of the main greenhouse gas.
