The certification organisation Rainforest Alliance states that scaled-up efforts to support climate-smart agriculture practices are desperately needed to support the millions of cocoa farmers that are suffering from the negative impacts of climate change.
Drought in Indonesia is reported to have halved the yield for many of the cocoa farmers and vast areas of the world’s two top cocoa growers, Ghana and Côte D’Ivoire, are expected to become less suitable for cocoa production as global temperatures climb.
Cocoa and chocolate companies are therefore by urged by Rainforest Alliance to support efforts to mitigate the negative climate effects on cocoa production and increasingly share local risks as identified by the alliance in order to protect millions of livelihoods.
