UK farmers may be given targets to reverse soil damage and restore soil health by 2030, as part of an agricultural bill to be brought before parliament later this year.
It’s not yet clear exactly what form the targets will take, but Rebecca Pow, parliamentary private secretary to environment ministers, said, “Farmers can be given incentives to improve soil management, such as by crop rotation.” Environment secretary Michael Gove has warned that the UK is 30 to 40 years away from a soil fertility crisis.
