The UK Collaborative on Development Sciences has published a new book by Gordon Conway (formerly the Chief Scientific Advisor for DFID) and Jeff Waage (Director of the London International Development Centre).

The authors aim to show how science can contribute to international development. As the preface states: "People in international development often have very different views about the value of science. At one extreme, some see science and technology providing the principle means for reducing poverty, eliminating disease and improving wellbeing. At another extreme, science is seen as part of an imposed, external regime, associated with industrial exploitation an suppression of indigenous knowledge...We hope that this book will give (...) a clearer picture of the role that science and innovation can play.

We firmly believe that science is only one of many factors which can contribute to development, but we want that factor to be well understood." The book consists of four parts, covering the following themes: mobilising science for development; science and millennium development goals; the challenge of climate change; and a conclusion.

You can download the book (or individual chapters) here and also order a hard copy.
