Food manufacturer Mars and the Fairtrade Foundation have announced that as of 2012 Maltesers sold in the UK and Ireland will be made from Fairtrade cocoa. Maltesers is the third biggest confectionery brand in the UK, and its switch will represent more than a 10% increase in total UK Fairtrade sales. Over the long-term, Mars will explore how best to scale up its purchases of Fairtrade cocoa.
