Low Carbon Lifestyles: still searching for Gladwell's Tipping Point

Research by Icaro Consulting in 2009, testing reactions to a range of low carbon propositions, showed the British public were interested but looking for support.

The research, marking a shift away from the focus on general attitudes, looks at 12 options including technologies like solar panels, financial support packages like 'green loans', in-home smart meters, and real time variable electricity pricing. A representative sample of 1,000 British adults aged 18-64 were interviewed online by Ipsos MORI.

One of the 12 options was an environmental 'traffic light' labelling system on products in shops and supermarkets, based on how environmentally friendly it is to produce them. For example, green for low impact, red for high impact and yellow for medium impact (like there is for the health content of food products). The survey found that 19% would be "very interested" in this idea, and 41% "fairly interested".
