Life cycle inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and use of land and energy of Brazilian beef exported to Europe

Life cycle inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and use of land and energy of Brazilian beef exported to Europe, SIK Report Nr 792 2009, Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology, Cederberg C, Meyer D and Flysj (2009).

This study estimates the life cycle GHG emissions and the use of energy and land from beef produced in Brazil and exported to Europe (Stockholm, Sweden).

A national top-down model approach of Brazilian beef production was applied and LCA methodology was used as the primary method. Two functional units were used:

  • one kg of Brazilian beef at the farm-gate, as carcass weight equivalent
  • one kg of Brazilian beef exported to Europe (Stockholm, Sweden), as bone-free beef (1kg carcass weight = 0.7kg bone free meat)
  • This study considers emissions of methane, nitrous oxide emissions, and C02 from the production and use of materials and energy.

GHG emissions from land-use transformation caused by the expansion of pasture into forestland were also included; but will be reported in a coming paper. Transports and slaughter processing are also included in functional unit no 2.
