Horticulture Australia Ltd: discussion papers on carbon footprinting

Horticulture Australia Limited has published a series of discussion papers on carbon footprinting. This sector is the first of many fresh produce groups in Australia beginning to measure its environmental impact.

The six scoping studies cover the following topics:

  • What is a carbon footprint?
  • How will carbon footprinting address the issues of reduction, mitigation, emissions trading and marketing?
  • What carbon footprinting tools are currently available?
  • Preliminary estimation of the carbon footprint of the Australian vegetable industry
  • Who will use the vegetable carbon tool?
  • Options for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions for the Australian vegetable industry

According to calculations the horticulture sector accounts for 1% of Australia's agricultural emissions; agriculture as a whole in Australia accounts for 16% of total Australian emissions.
