From 2009, beer brewer Heineken will ship the majority of the export beer that is brewed in Zoetermeer (the Netherlands) by barge to the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam. In this manner the Dutch company expects to save 100,000 truck journeys per annum.
The main reason for this large scale modal shift is the increasing number of traffic jams. All the export beer, about 50,000 40ft containers per year, will be shipped from a new inland shipping container terminal in Alphen aan de Rijn by barge to Rotterdam and Antwerp.
However, trucks will still be used for the transport from the brewery to the inland terminal and trucks are also used for the beer transports to Dutch buyers.
