Gordon Brown signals support for 80% carbon dioxide cut by 2050

In a speech to the Labour Party conference Gordon Brown asked the Climate Change Committee to report on the case for 80% cut in carbon emissions. Brown argued that, 'for all its benefits, the global age has revealed not just financial instability but another major pressure - a rising global population demanding more energy'.

He stated that the new settlement requires a great endeavour to end the dictatorship of oil and to avert catastrophic climate change. Brown asked the committee to report by October 2008 on the case for an 80% cut in carbon emissions by 2050.
