Geo-engineering Options for Mitigating Climate Change

This DECC paper, which was prepared during 2008, is intended to provide a preliminary assessment of a number of geo-engineering options that have been proposed so far.

It is informed by comments received from a range of scientific experts and interested parties. The paper is not intended to be exhaustive, rather it aims to provide an initial foundation to stimulate comment and discussion. It focuses on the high profile geo-engineering schemes, rather than attempting to discuss all possible options. These schemes are categorised under:

  1. alteration of the Earth's radiation balance; and
  2. removal and storage of atmospheric CO2.

A report by Corporate Watch, Technofixes: A Critical Guide to Climate Change Technologies also looks at geoenineering and you can read it here.
