Energy Policy Video: Global Development and Environment Institute

Energy policy was one of the central issues in the 2008 presidential campaign. Most of the debate focused on whether the United States should increase domestic oil development.

In a 12-minute web video, GDAE researcher Brian Roach argues that the recent emphasis on domestic oil development is not only irrelevant, it distracts us from our real energy problems. The primary objective of any comprehensive energy policy in the United States should be reducing our reliance on oil.

This will require investments in a broad range of clean energy technologies, but also economic policies that create an appropriate set of incentives. The missing factor is not a shortage of effective policy options, it is the political courage and leadership to put these ideas into action. The video discussion provides an overview of U.S. energy policy for students, researchers, and the general public.
