Council of Food Policy Advisors publishes first report

On 14 September 2009, The Council of Food Policy Advisors published its first report for Environment Secretary Hilary Benn. The Council has identified the three early priority areas for government action...

  • Defining the low impact (sustainable) healthy diet.
  • Government to exemplify best practice in health and sustainability through public food procurement.
  • A strategy for increasing consumption and domestic production of fruit and vegetables.

It also identifies future priority areas. More specific information on the three priority areas is as being: water, skills, research and development, poverty, eating patterns, food security.

The round table discussion (chaired by the Secretary of State in July 2009 to discuss these issues) clearly identified that the most effective way of delivering progress and results on the above priorities would be by establishing a fruit and vegetable task force charged with building momentum and steering progress. This recommendation is strongly endorsed by the Council.
