The Cocoa Barometer 2012, a joint initiative of the VOICE Network (a coalition of NGOs), has produced a report that aims to provide an overview of current sustainability developments in the cocoa sector.
The authors argue that current efforts to solve challenges in the cocoa sector need to be reinvigorated with a broader, holistic approach that includes such considerations as a living income for farmers and their families, a diversification of income, access to finance, access to agricultural inputs, a focus on social and environmental issues, financial transparency along the supply chain, and an investment in local infrastructure. The report focuses on West Africa’s cocoa sector, due to its dominance in cocoa production and the significant challenges facing this region.
