Waste from Cargill's meat processing facility in Alberta, Canada, will be used to fuel a waste-to-energy plant that will boost the proportion of renewable energy used by the site to around 80%. Once it is operating, the plant will produce 1.4 megawatts of power and eliminate 21,000 metric tons of fossil fuel emissions annually [nb. The report isn’t clear whether it is US or metric tonnes, and whether the CO2 or something else is being measured]. Approximately $10 million (Canadian dollars) of the $36 million total will be provided by the Canadian government of Canada as part of its initiative to help meat processors reduce their environmental footprint.
