BioCarbon Tracker tool

BioCarbon Tracker – funded by the biofuels company, Greenergy, with technical support from Ecometrica, The University of Edinburgh and the UK‘s National Centre for Earth Observation – is a tool that has been developed to provide a clear picture of where carbon is stored, which reserves of biocarbon are most at risk from agricultural expansion, and where there are opportunities to improve biocarbon reserves through better land management.

The tool does 4 things, it:

  • Maps above- ground carbon stores – not yet below-ground stores as this is harder to assess

  • Maps above- ground carbon stores – not yet below-ground stores as this is harder to assess
  • Identifies areas with at risk of undergoing a change in land use and then gives it a risk score as to how vulnerable that area
  • Identifies opportunitis for increasing carbon stores (restoration of land, increased productivity)
  • Is in the process of developing a near-real-time system of monitoring deforestation

The tool is focused only on carbon – it does not assess biodiversity impacts.
