Austrian study: environmental impacts of a healthier diet

A study by the Vienna University of Technology examines the environmental impacts of switching to a healthier diet. It says that this would mean people reducing their meat consumption by half, and finds that this would reduce the area required for the production of food would 3600 square meters to 2600 square meters per person. Per capita GHG emissions would be reduced from 890 kg CO2 / person / year to 580 kg CO2 / person / year. The impacts of switching to organic food consumption would be less significant.

The study, in German, can be downloaded here. So far all that’s available in English is here, but there are plans to translate the study into English.
