This is an exciting opportunity to build Sentient Media’s Food & Farming Media Network. You will manage all aspects of this program from strategic goal setting, to course design, to managing a team and a small budget. This role will suit someone who has a vision, demonstrates initiative and has a passion for supporting and empowering others. 

About the Food & Farming Media Network

Sentient Media’s Food and Farming Media Network is a members-only space for journalists at all stages of their careers who wish to learn about and report on food systems and factory farming. Members have free access to resources for freelancers, self-guided courses, events featuring guest speakers such as editors from Vox, undercover investigators and award-winning journalists and plenty of opportunities for pitching and networking. 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Manage, monitor and create content for the members.
  • Develop outreach strategies in line with Sentient Media’s goals. 
  • Manage community ambassadors and a part-time program assistant. 
  • Manage a budget for course development. 
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of print and electronic materials including, but not limited to, newsletters, blog, annual reports etc. 
  • Participate in monthly team meetings, bi-weekly meetings with executive director, monthly pitch meetings, bi-weekly coordination meetings with department leads and any other meetings required to maintain and further the success of the program.
  • Support fundraising efforts.
  • Attend conferences to share the work and be an ambassador for the program and organization. 

Leadership

  • Develop and implement the program strategy in line with Sentient Media’s mission.
  • Lead the Food & Farming Media Network, setting quarterly and yearly goals and developing strategies for engagement.
  • Manage community ambassadors and a part-time program assistant. 
  • Support the Executive Director in crafting fundraising proposals to sustain and expand program initiatives.
  • Attend leadership meetings to provide updates on program activities and contribute to strategic discussions.
  • Collaborate with program assistants through regular meetings to ensure effective communication and coordination.

Program Strategy and Development

  • Lead the program strategy development, mapping out yearly and quarterly goals for the Food & Farming Media Network.
  • Oversee course and resource auditing and the updating of course content for relevance and effectiveness.
  • Manage a budget for course development in 2024.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Analyze insights from network membership, engagement, events and courses to optimize content and improve engagement.
  • Provide statistical reports to leadership and board members.
  • Develop and manage a feedback process for members.
  • Generate improvement recommendations and share them with the leadership team.
  • Manage, monitor, create content for the members.
  • Track and measure the level of engagement within the network over time.

Admin

  • Regularly update content on the website, Slack and other materials to ensure up-to-date and engaging information.
  • Manage all emails for the program, including the “Writing for Change” newsletter, by gathering pitch opportunities and other resources and sending it out bi-weekly.

Position Requirements:

  • Strong substantive journalism experience for a news media outlet.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (or equivalent experience in key areas of journalism and program management). 
  • Strong work ethic and a commitment to the objectives of the organization.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Experience developing and implementing program strategies. 
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Experience managing a team. 
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work on a tight timeline.
  • Experience independently planning, coordinating and managing complex strategies.
  • Proven success in growing online communities, building brand awareness and engaging communities. 
  • Highly effective organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to self-start and work well in a team-driven environment.
  • Understanding of the key journalists and outlets covering climate, science, agriculture, justice and health. 

Desirable Requirements:

  • Willingness to embrace or experience working with tools such as AI to automate where possible.
  • Experience with fundraising for programs.
  • Experience designing courses for journalists.
