The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has emphasised the need for unimpeded access to allow food supplies to reach affected populations in the Gaza strip. A representative from the WFP commented that "as the conflict intensifies, civilians, including vulnerable children and families, face mounting challenges in accessing essential food supplies”.
Summary
The UN WFP has been providing food assistance to up to 350,000 Palestinians monthly in the lead up to the recent invasion. Whilst local shops hold up to a month's supply of food, these are quickly being depleted by stockpile purchasing and food spoilage due to electricity shortages. The WFP has urged both parties to allow safe access to affected areas in line with the principles of humanitarian law, including ensuring access to food.
