Surplus of cheese in America takes on gargantuan proportions - and industry calls for government bail out

With milk prices in the USA dropping due in part to a fall in demand from Chinese middle class customers, large stockpiles of cheese now lie waiting.

Over 1.2 billion pounds of cheese in cold storage was overproduced when dairy production began to exceed demand and farmers did not know where to sell it. In response, federal foodbanks have bought up some of the surplus cheese in a bid to help dairy farmers, although the industry wants more. Yet, environmentalists and economists have criticised the financial support, arguing that in fact the government is responsible for overproduction of milk.
