This publication summarises the work of the FAO with the agricultural community to tackle climate change and its effects. The report begins by summarising four key underpinning principles of their work with food production systems:
· That climate change is a major threat to efforts to end poverty and undernutrition.
· That a major role in climate change mitigation and resilience can be played by food production sectors.
· That agriculture (and other food production systems) can simultaneously address poverty, hunger and climate change.
· And that it is therefore of great importance that agriculture transforms to become more productive, sustainable and resilient.
It then elaborates on the actions that the FAO is taking to support countries in modifying agriculture to reduce contributions to climate change as well as to deal with its effects. These actions include both remotely developing and promoting tools and methods to support countries – such as ways of assessing vulnerability of crops and livestock to climate change, improved weather forecasting and improving management of natural resources – and “actions on the ground” – such as working directly with farmers and those involved in aquaculture to help them adopt more climate-change resilient approaches, and trying to reduce deforestation and land use change.
The report concludes by saying that the FAO is uniquely positioned to provide technical support, tools and information to enable countries to meet their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (voluntary climate-related pledges), and a “neutral platform for dialogue and advocacy” for the actors involved in these processes.
Abstract
This booklet presents the key messages of FAO on climate change and food security. It includes a synthesis of the most recent support provided by FAO to countries to face the impacts of climate change. It also brings together the most relevant knowledge on climate change including tools and methodologies FAO can offer to countries to report on their greenhouse gas emissions coming from the agriculture, livestock and forestry sectors.
