Summary: FoodTalks - From emergency to recovery

The UK’s Food Ethics Council has published a write-up of its event “#FoodTalks: From emergency to recovery”, which was held on 28 April 2020. The event discussed how the UK’s food system can move towards resilience and fairness during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants identified food system changes they have observed since the COVID-19 pandemic started, including:

  • A shift in government narrative from food sustainability towards food resilience.
  • More focus on local food and connection between consumers and producers, e.g. through vegetable box schemes.
  • There is more attention on food in general, although some issues such as single-use plastic have received less attention.
