In 2009, the Technology Strategy Board announced plans to establish a Sustainable Agriculture and Food Innovation Platform to bring together government, business and researchers to focus on the development and adoption of new technologies to increase sustainable food productivity, while decreasing environmental impact.

The Platform will see investment of up to approximately £75m over the next five years in technological research and development in areas such as crop productivity, sustainable livestock production, waste reduction and management, and greenhouse gas reduction. The early stages of the work will include the investment of up to approximately £13m in new research and development that will help crop growers to respond to the dual challenges of increasing productivity while reducing the environmental impact of crop production.

With funding from the Technology Strategy Board, Defra and the BBSRC, the "Novel Approaches to Crop Protection" funding competition will open on 18 January 2010.

The Technology Strategy Board is an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by DBIS (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills), and it is leading the development of the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Innovation Platform together with the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
