On 11 November 2009, Compassion in World Farming and Friends of the Earth jointly published a report entitled: Eating the planet? How we can feed the world without trashing it. The report is based on research commissioned by the two organisations, undertaken by the Institute of Social Ecology in Austria and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, which led to the production of a much longer study entitled Eating the Planet: Feeding and fuelling the world sustainably, fairly and humanely– a scoping study.

In essence, the researchers were asked to examine the feasibility of feeding the world sustainably, fairly and humanely in 2050 by modelling different livestock systems, diet scenarios, land-use change scenarios and potential crop yields; and to factor into their examination the possible effects of climate change on food production. The CIWF have also published a separate but complementary report, Beyond Factory Farming: Sustainable solutions for animals, people and the planet (2009), highlighting the social, health, environmental and welfare problems associated with intensive livestock production.
