The Global Salmon LCA was a joint initiative of Dalhousie University, Ecotrust and SIK – The Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology - which formally ran from 2005-2008 but publications reporting results continue to emerge.

The project’s focus was to life cycle assessment of salmon, salmon fishing and farming systems around the world, from resource extraction to processing and delivery. The aim was to take a multi-dimensional approach to sustainability, looking not just at global environmental indicators (eg. greenhouse gas emissions) but also at effects on the local marine ecosystem and on social welfare.

In support of this a number of methodological papers exploring techniques for including socio-economic and local ecological aspects into an LCA framework resulted in parallel with analytical results.

The project also produced a series of factsheets and the website also has links to a number of publications on fish and their environmental impacts.
