The Carbon Footprint of Fisheries

Seas at Risk provide this useful short report which identifies fisheries with high carbon footprints and suggests ways to reduce the carbon footprint of these fisheries through changes in gear and fishing method. The proposed changes include a switch away from the use of trawling in general. It proposes the following alternatives to trawling for three fisheries:

  1. the use of creels for the capture of lobster
  2. the use of seine netting for capture of flatfish and
  3. the use of gill netting cod fisheries.
